1989
An artistic beginning.
Valerie Schmieder founded Valerie Schmieder Design Consultants as a sole proprietorship specializing in interior and furniture design. Her artistic perspective and thoughtful approach to design established the foundation that continues to guide Via today.
1997
Built through collaboration.
The firm became Via Design. Derived from the Latin word via, meaning "by way of," the name reflects a unified approach to design and the collaborative process that reflects a unified approach to design and the collaborative process that defines the firm.
1999
Strengthened through integration.
When principal architect Brian Barkwell joined as a partner, Via expanded beyond interiors to offer architectural services. This integrated approach remains central to the way our team collaborates.
2021
An expanded studio.
As Via continued to grow, so did its downtown Grand Rapids studio. The expansion created space for a retail showroom, an enhanced design library, and additional meeting areas, supporting greater collaboration and an improved client experience.
Today
Integrated by design.
Today, Via brings architecture, interior design, furniture selection, procurement, and installation together under one roof. Our integrated team collaborates from concept through completion, creating a seamless experience where every design decision is considered together.
