We Are Via : Scott Sikkema
Scott Sikkema, Chief Financial Officer at Via Design, brings a unique blend of engineering expertise, entrepreneurial drive, and lifelong curiosity to his role. Since joining Via in 2008, he has helped guide the firm’s financial strategy while supporting its continued growth in West Michigan.
Early Foundations in Problem Solving
Scott grew up in Fulton, Illinois, a small Mississippi River town surrounded by farmland, where creativity and hands-on problem-solving were part of everyday life. His mother, Lorna, was an interior designer, and his father, Art, owned a lumber yard and furniture store while also working as a carpenter. That environment left a lasting impression.
From building forts and radios to running a nightcrawler business out of a small structure he built himself, Scott’s early years were defined by making, experimenting, and learning by doing. “I had a really great childhood of crazy adventures,” he reflects.
From Engineering to Cabinetry and Product Innovation
He went on to study electrical engineering at Calvin University, launching his career in engineering and leadership roles at leading companies, including one known for inventing sliced bread.
After acquiring and later selling a cabinetry manufacturing company, he went on to co-found CLEO Cabinetry, expanding his focus to craftsmanship, operations, and product innovation.
Connecting Via Design and CLEO Cabinetry
In addition to his role at Via Design, Scott is the founder and president of CLEO Cabinetry, a fully custom line of cabinets made in West Michigan. The relationship between Via and CLEO creates a strong connection between design and fabrication, allowing ideas to move seamlessly from concept to execution.
He also leads Birchgear, a product line focused on innovative storage solutions for the home, vehicle, and bike, and is a design engineer and partner at Velocity USA, a manufacturer of aftermarket bicycle wheels. Across these ventures, Scott’s work reflects a consistent focus on performance and craftsmanship.
A Family-Led Design Firm
Family is central to Scott’s experience at Via. His sister, Val Schmieder, is a founder of the firm, and their shared history contributes to a collaborative and trusted partnership. “Val is the best partner one could ask for,” he reflects. Together, they represent the close-knit culture that defines Via.
Outside the Office: Sailing and Cycling
Outside of work, Scott is an avid cyclist and sailor, drawn to the strategy, problem-solving, and sense of adventure both pursuits require. Those same qualities carry into his approach to business.
Scott and his wife enjoy an active family life in West Michigan with their two children. Much of his time outside of work is spent with family, whether at home, on the trail, or on the water.
Looking Ahead: Opportunity and Growth
Looking ahead, Scott remains focused on continued growth across Via Design and CLEO, with an emphasis on thoughtful design and quality construction. His advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: don’t wait.
Through his leadership, curiosity, and hands-on approach, Scott plays an important role in shaping the future of Via Design and its integrated approach to architecture, interiors, and fabrication.
