Brian’s love of drawing began in childhood, and his interest in architecture followed soon after. He was influenced in part by his grandfather, a respected home builder and architect, whose work gave Brian an early appreciation for the relationship between design and the spaces we live in.
As a child, Brian enjoyed drawing and cartooning; in high school, he began developing his drafting skills. He went on to study architecture at Montana State University and is a licensed architect. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
Brian joined his business partner, Val at Via Design in 2000, expanding the firm’s services to include licensed architecture. Together, they have helped shape Via into a multidisciplinary practice encompassing architecture, interior design, and furnishings, serving residential and commercial clients in Michigan, Florida, and beyond.
As Principal Architect, Brian believes great architecture begins with collaboration. He works closely with clients to understand what they want to achieve, bringing together design, materials, budget, and construction to create spaces that are thoughtful, purposeful, and personal. His approach extends beyond the architecture itself, considering interiors, furnishings, and the details that ultimately shape how a space feels and functions.
As a leader and mentor, Brian encourages his team to explore ideas and develop solutions together. Design charrettes are an important part of his process, bringing clients and design teams together to engage directly with ideas and help shape the direction of a project.
Over the course of his career, Brian has built lasting client relationships and developed a reputation for thoughtful, artistic, and distinctive design. His work has received awards and recognition from his peers. For Brian, architecture brings together creativity and practicality: the opportunity to create places with purpose and character that work well for the people who use them.
Outside the studio, Brian continues to draw and paint in oils and watercolor. He also enjoys traveling with his wife, visiting their grandchildren in San Diego and Portland, Maine.
