Via Design transformed a long-vacant former chapel building into The Friesian Gastro Pub, creating a vibrant destination that celebrates both the owners' Dutch heritage and the community-focused spirit of Grand Rapids' Midtown neighborhood. The adaptive reuse project reimagines the existing structure while preserving its character, turning an underutilized property into a welcoming gathering place. The interior design draws inspiration from the Friesian horse, a breed originating from the Friesland province of the Netherlands, with custom booth backs featuring leather straps reminiscent of saddle fastenings and a curated gallery of photographs showcasing scenes from the Netherlands.

At the heart of the space, a centrally located three-sided bar with a walnut countertop encourages connection and social interaction throughout the restaurant. An energetic palette of blue, orange, and gold brings warmth and vibrancy to the interior, complementing the eclectic atmosphere and globally inspired menu, resulting in a memorable dining experience that balances heritage, hospitality, and contemporary character.
