Designing a Cottage in Harmony with Nature

Living with the Landscape

Tucked within a secluded woodland, this cottage stands as more than just an escape; it’s an invitation to experience nature through design. Crafted with a deep appreciation for the land and an eye for architectural drama, the cottage is defined by a sense of “compression and release,” a technique inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright that plays with the journey from enclosed spaces to wide-open vistas. This intentional balance between shelter and revelation allows the home’s design to unfold in harmony with its natural setting, capturing the beauty of the outdoors at every turn.

Design Vision

From the beginning, the project was driven by the goal to create an immersive connection to the surroundings, with large windows and minimal window treatments allowing nature to be fully experienced from any room. This emphasis on “bringing the outside in” speaks to the clients' desire for a space that feels like a seamless extension of the forest beyond. Every architectural choice, from framing outdoor views to preserving mature trees, responds to the woodland setting. The home is not simply placed within nature; it is shaped by it, enhancing and celebrating the landscape at every turn.

Creating Drama Through Design

At the heart of the cottage’s layout lies the concept of “compression and release.” As guests enter, they are initially surrounded by spine walls that run along the home's main axes. This approach preserves the visual impact of the cottage’s expansive glass walls and gathering spaces, keeping them concealed for a dramatic reveal. Visitors are encouraged to pause, take in the carefully shielded views, and anticipate what lies ahead. This gradual unveiling heightens the experience of the home, amplifying the sense of discovery that resonates throughout the journey from one space to the next.

Bringing Nature Indoors

The design team was committed to incorporating nature as an intrinsic part of the cottage. Open, airy volumes and high glass elements fill the spaces with natural light, making the transition between indoors and outdoors nearly seamless. The architecture purposefully frames outdoor views, turning the towering trees and vibrant foliage into living art within the home. The materials and colors selected harmonize with the forest’s seasonal tones, enhancing a sense of calm and connection. Deer and wild turkey can often be seen from the cottage’s gathering spaces and private suites, reminding residents of the delicate balance between human retreat and the wild landscapes outside.

Site Sensitivity and Architectural Flow

A sense of fluidity defines the cottage exterior as much as the interior. Varied rooflines and footprint jogs create an ebb and flow that allow the home to situate naturally between the trees and move with the land. The preservation of trees, as well as balancing a delicate line between opening up to the views while also assuring adequate privacy was of paramount importance. After thoughtful positioning of the home and taking great care to embed the home into the inherent beauty this site offers, a poetic relationship echoes throughout this wooded retreat. One can’t help but feel the connection with nature upon arriving and experiencing each nook and cranny of the cottage.
