Meet Isabel Van Huizen, Design Intern

We're pleased to welcome Isabel Van Huizen to Via Design as a Design Intern! Currently a junior at Kendall College of Art and Design, where she is studying Interior Design, Isabel brings a passion for creative problem-solving, an appreciation for natural materials, and an eagerness to learn about the professional design process.

Originally from Allendale, Michigan, Isabel has always enjoyed creative pursuits and finding ways to bring order and function to the spaces around her. Her interest in interior design stems from the opportunity to combine creativity with practical solutions and create environments that are both functional and welcoming.

Learning Through Collaboration

As a Design Intern, Isabel supports Via's interior design team with a range of tasks throughout the design process. Her responsibilities include researching and organizing materials, coordinating product samples, and running design-related errands.

Working alongside experienced designers, Isabel gains firsthand exposure to the coordination and attention to detail involved in bringing a project from concept to completion. Her contributions help keep materials, information, and project resources organized and accessible, allowing our designers to focus on developing and refining design solutions for clients.

Isabel was drawn to Via Design by the firm's collaborative environment and the opportunity to work across a diverse range of projects.

"I wanted an internship where I could learn from experienced designers and gain hands-on experience with real materials and products," she shares. "I was especially excited about the material library because I know materials are such an important part of every design, and I'm eager to expand my knowledge."

Through her internship, Isabel hopes to deepen her understanding of materials and finishes while learning how designers navigate the many decisions and details involved in professional projects.

Inspired by Nature and Natural Materials

Outside the studio, Isabel enjoys spending time outdoors, whether visiting Northern Michigan or exploring local trails throughout West Michigan.

These experiences provide an opportunity to recharge and find inspiration in the natural environment.
Her appreciation for nature also influences her design preferences, particularly her interest in warm, natural wood tones.

"Whether it's incorporated through architectural details or furniture, I love how wood adds warmth, texture, and a timeless quality that makes a space feel inviting and connected to nature," Isabel explains.

This interest in natural materials reflects her broader approach to design, where visual character and everyday function work together to create spaces that feel comfortable and welcoming.

Getting to Know Isabel

If Isabel could take on any design project, she would love to create a multigenerational lakeside cottage where family and friends could gather, slow down, and build lasting traditions. She envisions a home filled with natural light, warm materials, comfortable gathering areas, and personal details that reflect the people who use it.

For her own dream home, Isabel would include a four-season room with expansive windows overlooking the changing Michigan landscape. A cozy window seat for reading and a small table for crafting and puzzles would make the space a comfortable retreat throughout the year.

As Isabel continues her studies and gains experience at Via, she looks forward to learning from the team, exploring new materials, and developing a deeper understanding of how thoughtful design takes shape in practice.
