Welcome Leah and Laura to the Via Team
We’re excited to welcome two new team members to Via Design: Leah and Laura! Leah joins us part-time as our Resource Library Assistant, where she’ll help maintain an organized and up-to-date materials library, an essential part of our design process—working closely with Resource Librarian and Interior Designer Suzanne. Laura joins us as a design intern and will be mentored by Senior Interior Designers Emily and Sara. She’ll gain hands-on experience across all phases of the design process and have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to our projects.
Leah Ryal
Tell us about yourself!
I’m Leah! I grew up in Mason, Michigan. I graduated from Central Michigan University with a BA in Art History and Psychology. My favorite areas of study were Modern and Contemporary Art and examining the intersections of art and well-being. After graduation, I moved to Grand Rapids and live here with my partner and our cat.
What drew you to this role?
Previously, I had worked at a local art gallery that often worked with designers to place artwork. I loved seeing artwork find beautiful homes and was interested in learning more about the interior design side of things. I’ve always sought out creative spaces with supportive people and Via Design felt like a great fit.
What are you passionate about?
I love all art, but especially fibers! In recent years, I’ve been delving into knitting, crocheting, and sewing. I love turning thrifted materials like old yarn, curtains, and bed sheets into new garments! I try to prioritize making as little waste as possible and reusing what I can.
What’s your dream project to design or work on someday?
I would love to work on a project for a library or gallery!
If you could design a dream home for yourself, what is one must-have design feature it would include?
I have always dreamt of having my own studio inside my home. I would love great lighting and a large cutting table. A great organization system for supplies would be a must, including flat file storage and lots of cubbies to store yarn and fabric. Building custom carpeted bin/shelf storage for artwork would also be a dream!
What inspires you most about interior design and/or architecture?
I love that you can learn so much about a person based on their home, or even about a city based on its architecture. You can really begin to glimpse what is important to someone and how that translates to their surroundings.

Tell us about yourself!
I grew up and currently live in Hamilton, MI (a small town south of Holland). I spent the first two years of my college career at GRCC and then transferred to Kendall College of Art and Design last fall, where I’m on track to graduate next spring with a bachelor’s degree in interior design. I love a good sunset, and enjoy living in West Michigan and being a short drive from the lake. I also have a 10-year-old Golden Retriever named Remy who loves to tag along wherever I go and is a good boy (most of the time!).
What drew you to this role?
I was drawn to Via because of the thoughtful approach and attention to detail evident within the designs. It’s a well-established and professional firm, and I knew it was a place I wanted to learn and grow in. Also, my former professor at GRCC - Becky Miedema, took us on a tour here while I was in her class, and immediately the atmosphere and designs inspired me and grew my interest.
What are you passionate about?
Trying new things! Whether it’s creating something new or trying a new restaurant, I always love seeing and doing new things. I also enjoy hosting dinner parties with friends and creating unique tablescapes and opportunities to gather and connect.
If you could design a dream home for yourself, what is one must-have design feature it would include?
Natural light – everywhere! I’d have huge windows, skylights, and a sunroom. I’d also include a little art room with a large gallery wall and tons of plants, color, and textures, as a fun escape and addition to the home.
What is your favorite design trend right now and why?
The increased use of bold color and patterns! I love how much visual interest it brings into space, as well as depth and character.
What inspires you most about interior design and/or architecture?
The way design tells a story. I love how every space is different, and each time you step into a space, you’re automatically immersed in the story. Spaces affect how people feel and live, and we’re given the ability to create spaces that heal, uplift, and inspire others, which is such a rewarding opportunity.
We’re thrilled to have Leah and Laura join us and bring their unique perspectives, creativity, and enthusiasm to the Via Design team. Whether organizing the materials library or diving into the design process, their contributions are already making a positive impact. We look forward to supporting their growth and watching their talents continue to unfold. Welcome, Leah and Laura!
